Justice Emily Miskel currently serves on the 5th District Court of Appeals in Dallas. She previously served as Judge of the 470th district court of Collin County, Texas, for seven years after being appointed by Governor Greg Abbott in 2015. During the challenging times of the pandemic, she admirably assumed the role of Local Administrative District Judge of Collin County. Under her leadership, the courts operated safely and efficiently, ensuring uninterrupted access to justice.
With an impressive legal background, Justice Miskel holds double board certification in Family Law and Child Welfare Law from the Texas Board of Legal Specialization. She obtained her law degree from Harvard Law School and holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University. She is an expert at bringing technology to courts and speaks nation-wide on various legal technology topics, including electronic evidence, e-discovery, data theft, interception of communications, and online impersonation.
Beyond her judicial duties, Justice Miskel is actively involved in shaping policies for the Texas judiciary. She currently holds the position of Chair of Civil Justice in the Texas Judicial Council, the esteemed policy-making body for the state judiciary.
Additionally, she serves on the Supreme Court Advisory Committee, the Pattern Jury Charge Oversight Committee, and the Computer & Technology Law Council for the State Bar of Texas. For eight years, she dedicated her time and expertise as a board member of the Golden Corridor Republican Women in Collin County, Texas.
In recognition of her exceptional judicial qualities, Chief Justice Roberts of the United States Supreme Court honored Justice Miskel in 2020 with the prestigious William H. Rehnquist Award for Judicial Excellence. This esteemed accolade, bestowed by the National Center for State Courts, recognizes her outstanding contributions and unwavering commitment to upholding judicial excellence.
