PRESS RELEASE – September 18, 2018
(AUSTIN, TX) –
A historic win for Texas, he will be the first Hispanic Republican to serve in the Texas Senate. The Texas Federation of Republican Women congratulates Senator-Elect Peter Flores on his win in the special election for Senate District 19! Flores will serve the balance of Uresti’s term which ends in 2021.
This district hasn’t been republican since Reconstruction, or 139 years ago. Republican Peter Flores is a former Texas Colonel Game Warden, Director of Law Enforcement.
Mr. Flores’ win was a real upset in a district that political observers said shouldn’t have been competitive for Republicans. Winning with 53 percent of the vote to Gallego’s 47 percent with 44, 487 ballots cast, Flores’ victory increases the Senate GOP majority to 21 members,an important number as the caucus is protecting their three-fifths majority to bring legislation to the floor without
Democratic support.
Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick told the supporters at Flores’ victory party “For the first time in history, we will have 21 Republican senators and are all but assured a Republican super majority.”
