Laura Koerner is a wife, mother of twins, project manager, engineer, Mayor Pro Tem, and Chairwoman for the Texas Veterans Commission. She served in the United States Navy as a Surface Warfare (Nuclear) Officer onboard USS MAHAN (DDG 72) as the Tomahawk Strike Officer and onboard USS ENTERPRISE (CVN 65) in the Ship’s Damage Control/Fire Department and as a Reactor Watch Officer. Since 2017, Laura has served as an at-large Councilwoman for the City of Fair Oaks Ranch and was selected as Mayor Pro Tem in May 2021. She also serves as the President of the City’s Municipal Development District Board and is on the City’s Communications/Branding and Emergency Operations Committees. In 2018, Governor Abbott appointed her to serve as one of five Commissioners for the Texas Veterans Commission, and in 2020, she was appointed as the Chairwoman. In this role, she oversees a state agency of about 450 employees, which advocates for the 1.5 million Texas veterans and their families and the benefits they earned for their service in the United States Armed Forces. In addition, she serves on the State Veteran Cemetery Committee and is on the Veterans Access to Justice Committee for the Texas Supreme Court. Laura has previously served on the Board of the Texas Federation of Republican Women as Military Liaison and Communications, and served with Greater San Antonio Area Republican Women and San Antonio Republican Women. She is a current member of Camino Real Republican Women. She also was a Texas CD23 Republican National Delegate, served on the SD25 Convention Nominations Committee multiple years, and served as Communications Director for the Republican Party of Bexar County. She received a Bachelor of Science in Systems Engineering from the United States Naval Academy, and a Master of Science in Nuclear Engineering from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Laura works full time at USAA as a Director of Portfolio Management, and, in her spare time, she enjoys competing in triathlons. Laura lives in Fair Oaks Ranch with her husband, Mike, a retired Naval Officer and now Fire Captain, her twin daughters, Alexandra and Eva, and her mother, Sharon.
